Canvas Art

Canvas art overtook works created on panels during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Among the oldest surviving canvas works is a Madonna With Angels piece dated back to 1410. This support option first gained popularity in Italy before moving through Northern Europe.

Generally, canvas art is created with the use of a stretcher. This is the framework which supports the fabric. It may be created from wood as well as other materials such as aluminum. Many artists create their own stretchers to get more customization and quality at a reduced price.

Canvas art may or may not be original works. Today, it is very possible for reproductions of works to be printed on canvas. These will exist with varying amounts of quality. Some works may be crookedly printed on a cheaper set of light stretchers. Other reproductions may have been printed on a sturdier base with some additional details inserted by hand to increase value.
