What are the elements of art?
This is a set of seven different building blocks for the visual arts. They include line, shape, color, texture, form, space, and value. Some of these elements must be used within certain practices, while others are optional. For instance, a sculptor must work with form, however a printmaker may or may not work with texture.
What are the principles of art?
The principles of art may be described as the tools by which art is created. An artist works with these tools for visual organization. At the same time, viewers of a work generally evaluate these aspects to decide how the work appeals to them. Unlike the elements of art, these concepts are not clear cut. For instance, a person may list them as being balance, proportion, emphasis, unity, contrast, variety, movement, and rhythm. At the same time, harmony, pattern, proportion, and repetition may also be used in addition to these descriptions. Still, some people may view harmony and unity as the same thing or pattern, repetition, and rhythm as interchangeable.
